He has asserted his non-guilt regarding the allegations

Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to lawmakers and hindering a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's legal representative entered the plea acting as his counsel in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

The defense lawyer announced he would attempt to have the legal matter thrown out for various causes including that his defendant, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being selectively prosecuted.

The former director was indicted soon after Donald Trump urged his chief prosecutor to take action against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on mid-week, his attorney Patrick Fitzgerald informed the judge they aimed to file several motions to terminate the case before a trial, claiming the government's case was vindictive and that a government lawyer was unlawfully designated to assume control of the case.

Mr Comey's legal matter was initially overseen by the original attorney, who stepped down under influence from Donald Trump after his examination into an additional political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.

Judicial Environment

Mr Comey came across in positive mood as he walked into the court on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and being lighthearted. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the Trump administration recently fired.

Upon hearing to the judge state his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on Wednesday, the defendant was questioned if he grasped the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Thank you," he told the proceedings.

Previous Events

Mr Comey was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was terminated about four months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the moment, he was overseeing an investigation into foreign election meddling and whether there were any links between Russia and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey triggered a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 election that he was probing Democratic candidate the candidate's use of a personal email system. Indictments against the candidate were not pursued, causing negative feedback from Republicans as well.

Ongoing Accusations

Government attorneys assert James Comey gave untrue statements to the legislature during a congressional hearing in recent years when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They claim he misled the upper house by claiming he had not approved a person at the FBI to leak to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, obstruct and delay" the committee by making false statements to it.

Personal Comments

Through a recording James Comey shared to his online platform after he was charged, he stated he was innocent and accused Trump of behaving like a "dictator".

"My family and I have been aware for a long time that there are ramifications to challenging Donald Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I'm innocent," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a court case."

The charges against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump shared on digital channels calling for his chief prosecutor, the attorney general, prosecute James Comey and additional individuals.
