France's Prime Minister Quits Following Under One Month Amidst Widespread Condemnation of Freshly Appointed Government

The French political turmoil has worsened after the freshly installed PM unexpectedly quit within a short time of announcing a government.

Quick Resignation During Political Instability

Sébastien Lecornu was the third PM in a year-long span, as the republic continued to move from one political crisis to another. He resigned moments before his opening government session on the start of the week. Macron accepted his resignation on Monday morning.

Strong Criticism Over Fresh Cabinet

Lecornu had faced strong opposition from political opponents when he revealed a fresh cabinet that was virtually unchanged since last recent removal of his former PM, his predecessor.

The announced cabinet was dominated by the president's supporters, leaving the government almost unchanged.

Rival Criticism

Rival groups said the prime minister had stepped back on the "significant change" with earlier approaches that he had pledged when he took over from the unpopular former PM, who was dismissed on 9 September over a proposed budget squeeze.

Future Political Course

The issue now is whether the president will decide to dissolve parliament and call another early vote.

Jordan Bardella, the leader of Marine Le Pen's opposition group, said: "It's impossible to have a reestablishment of order without a fresh vote and the legislature's dismissal."

He continued, "It was very clearly Emmanuel Macron who chose this government himself. He has misinterpreted of the political situation we are in."

Election Calls

The opposition movement has pushed for another poll, thinking they can expand their representation and role in parliament.

The country has gone through a period of uncertainty and political crisis since the president called an inconclusive snap election last year. The parliament remains divided between the political factions: the liberal wing, the far right and the moderate faction, with no definitive control.

Financial Pressure

A budget for next year must be approved within coming days, even though political parties are at loggerheads and his leadership ended in barely three weeks.

No-Confidence Motion

Political groups from the progressive side to far right were to hold meetings on the start of the week to decide whether or not to support to remove the prime minister in a no-confidence vote, and it looked that the administration would collapse before it had even begun operating. The prime minister seemingly decided to step down before he could be ousted.

Ministerial Appointments

The majority of the key cabinet roles announced on the night before remained the unchanged, including Gérald Darmanin as justice minister and arts and heritage leader as cultural affairs leader.

The position of economy minister, which is essential as a fragmented legislature struggles to agree on a spending package, went to a Macron ally, a government partner who had previously served as business and power head at the start of the president's latest mandate.

Surprise Appointment

In a unexpected decision, the president's political partner, a government partner who had acted as economy minister for an extended period of his leadership, was reappointed to cabinet as national security leader. This enraged officials across the spectrum, who saw it as a sign that there would be no doubt or alteration of the president's economic policies.
