The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after failing a no-confidence vote that came after his disputed online comments about Charlie Kirk.

The vote against George Abaraonye achieved the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.

Contentious Posts

The controversy began after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in the United States.

According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the phrase 'lol'.

The president-elect is also said to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to welcome the incident.

Election Results

The vote of confidence took place over the weekend, with results announced on this week.

Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.

The notice stated that the future president was considered to have stepped down in following the society's regulations.

Procedural Disputes

Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.

In a statement, the student claimed that the vote tally had been stopped because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".

His statement unequivocally denied that any person appointed by the student had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.

Ongoing Dispute

The president-elect stated that extremely serious issues had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained the elected leader.

His comment added that he was "grateful and honored to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Opponents have argued that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has prioritized politics over principles".

External Responses

On Friday, Mikey McCoy read out an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message criticized the society of becoming a place where "presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent".

The statement warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and confirmed that concerns filed against him had been referred for official review.

The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the society in May.
